Island hopping from Koh Lanta to Koh Phi Phi across the Andaman Sea
Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi are only about 25 to 30 km apart. That makes them one of the easiest island hops in the Andaman Sea. Boats leave from Saladan Pier in northern Koh Lanta and arrive at Tonsai Pier on Phi Phi Don. The fastest speedboats take about 30 minutes. The slower ferry takes about an hour.
This guide covers the operators, departure times, seller prices, how to book and what to expect on the day.
- Seller prices don't match. They also aren't in ringgit. 12Go lists fares in USD. Direct Ferries Australia uses AUD and Ferryhopper uses EUR. Only Smarten Plus gives prices in baht. I've kept each price exactly as the seller shows it rather than converting it. Check the live price in RM when you book.
- One 12Go fare looks too low. The Chaokoh 08:00 ferry shows $8.03. The same page says the cheapest ferry is $18, and the page title says "from THB 602". Treat $8.03 as a possible promo or display error.
- Journey times conflict. Most sellers say 30 minutes for speedboats and 1 hour for the ferry. Some 12Go departures show 1 hour 45 minutes, which probably includes stops or hotel pickup. One 12Go reviewer said their trip took 2 hours.
- Timetables change by season. Each seller shows slightly different departure times. Ferryhopper says the route runs year-round but on fewer days in some months. Smarten Plus warns that monsoon season (May to October) can bring cancellations.
- Phi Phi entry fee. GoAsia says Phi Phi Don charges an entry fee of about ฿20. You pay it in cash at Tonsai Pier.

Ferry vs speedboat: which should you take?
The slower ferry between Koh Lanta and Koh Phi Phi is steadier for those who get seasick
Take the ferry (Chaokoh) if:
- You want the cheapest ticket.
- You get seasick easily. Bigger boats roll less.
- You have big luggage.
A speedboat can cross from Koh Lanta to Koh Phi Phi in about 30 minutes
Take the speedboat if:
- You want to arrive in about 30 minutes.
- You're travelling in the afternoon. Most later departures are speedboats.
- You don't mind a bumpy ride.
How to book your ticket
- Online in advance. 12Go, Direct Ferries and Ferryhopper all sell this route. Booking online is the safest choice from December to February.
- Hotel or tour desk on Koh Lanta. Many sell tickets with hotel pickup included. Ask whether pickup is part of the price.
- At Saladan Pier. You can buy on the day when boats are running, but seats aren't guaranteed in peak season.
Smarten Plus suggests booking one to two days ahead in busy periods. Ferryhopper suggests one to two months ahead for peak season.
Getting to Saladan Pier
Saladan Pier is in the far north of Koh Lanta. From Klong Dao it's only 5 to 10 minutes away. From Long Beach allow 10 to 15 minutes. From Kantiang Bay in the south it's about 35 minutes by car.
Some operators include a shared minivan pickup from Klong Dao or Long Beach. One 12Go reviewer said their pickup came late, but the boat waited for them. Be ready in your hotel lobby early.
Arriving at Tonsai Pier
Tonsai Pier, Koh Phi Phi: pay the island entry fee in cash on arrival
Boats arrive at Tonsai Pier, right next to Tonsai Village. Most hotels in the village are within walking distance. Have about ฿20 in cash ready for the entry fee.
Luggage
Ferryhopper says each passenger can usually bring one large bag and one hand bag, up to 25 kg in total, at no extra cost. Limits vary by operator, so check before you book. Keep your passport, cash and phone in a small bag on your lap. Big bags often go on the deck or at the front of the boat, where they may get splashed.
Tips for Malaysian travellers
- Carry baht in cash for the Phi Phi entry fee and small purchases at Tonsai.
- Halal food: pack a snack for the trip. Tonsai Village on Phi Phi has Muslim-run food stalls and restaurants near the pier.
- Take seasickness tablets about 30 minutes before boarding, especially in the monsoon season.
- Use a dry bag for your phone and documents on speedboats.
- Arrive 30 minutes early. Smarten Plus and Ferryhopper both advise this for check-in.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Booking the last boat of the day when you have a tight onward connection.
- Assuming hotel pickup is included without checking.
- Forgetting cash for the Phi Phi entry fee.
- Expecting a full timetable in the monsoon season.
- Booking a southern Koh Lanta hotel and then catching the 08:00 boat.

The same operators run the return route from Tonsai Pier to Saladan Pier. Ferryhopper lists Chaokoh from €18.70 and Andaman Wave Master from €18.98 for this direction. Check timetables separately, since departure times differ from the outbound route.
