Koh Lanta 3D2N Couple Itinerary: Romantic Beaches, Sunset Spots & Activities

Couple on a quiet Koh Lanta beach at sunset

Koh Lanta: quiet beaches and long sunsets for two

Koh Lanta is made for couples who want quiet beaches, slow mornings and long sunsets without the party crowds of Phi Phi. Its west coast faces the sunset, its resorts include several adults-only hideaways and its island day trips lead to hidden lagoons and clear snorkelling water.

Most locals are Muslim, so halal food is easy to find. That makes it a comfortable choice for Malaysian couples. This 3-day, 2-night plan mixes beach time, an island day and the best sunset spots.

Worth being upfront about three things: first, the hotel prices below come from one tour operator's site and are listed in US dollars per person per night. Treat them as a rough starting point and compare on booking sites. Second, most speedboat tours from Koh Lanta stop from about 1 May to 31 October. If you visit then, swap the Day 2 island trip for the land-based plan we suggest. Third, I couldn't find prices for the Top View Resort sunset restaurant at Kantiang Bay. One travel blogger calls it the best sunset view on Koh Lanta. Non-guests can visit for drinks and dinner.

Layana Resort & Spa, Long Beach: adults only, 18 and over

Our pick: Layana Resort & Spa. It only accepts guests aged 18 and over. The resort has 50 contemporary Thai-style rooms, each with a large balcony. Suites add open-air garden showers.

The Sundowner Bar is a favourite spot for sunset drinks. Tides Restaurant serves seafood. Layana scores 4.9 out of 5 from 2,597 reviews on Tripadvisor. One guest review notes that high-season prices are "quite high."

Day 1: arrive and unwind

MorningTake a morning flight from KL to Krabi. The lowest listed fares start from RM129 one way on Traveloka or RM199 on AirAsia.

AfternoonBook a private car from Krabi Airport to Koh Lanta. It costs ฿2,100 to ฿3,300 and takes about 2 hours, with no stops for other passengers. Shared minivans are cheaper at ฿399 to ฿429 per person, but take 2 to 2.5 hours. Check in, change into your swimwear and head to the beach.

Sunset on Long Beach, Koh Lanta

Long Beach, Koh Lanta: nearly 4 km of west-facing sand

EveningWatch your first sunset on Long Beach. Nearly 4 km of fine sand faces west, so the views are wide and open. Have drinks at the Layana Sundowner Bar or one of the beach bars, then dinner by the sea.

Day 2: island day and sunset at Kantiang Bay

Morning and afternoonSpend the day at sea. Choose one of these:

  • Koh Rok snorkelling. Two islands with clear, calm water about an hour away by boat. One guide lists about ฿1,700 per person including pickup, snorkel gear, lunch, drinks and fruit.
  • 4 Islands tour. Visit Koh Chuek, Koh Waen or Koh Ma, Koh Muk and Koh Ngai. Swim hand in hand through the Emerald Cave on Koh Muk, an 80-metre dark tunnel that opens into a hidden lagoon. Longtail tours start from about ฿1,000 per person.

Tours leave around 8am to 9am and return around 3:30pm to 4:30pm.

Kantiang Bay at sunset from above, Koh Lanta

Kantiang Bay, Koh Lanta: one of the island's best sunset views

EveningHead south to Kantiang Bay, about 25 km from Saladan pier. This crescent-shaped bay is known for its sunsets. For the best view, go to Top View Resort above the bay. Its huts look out over the Andaman Sea with 180-degree views. Non-guests can come for drinks and dinner. The road down to Kantiang is steep, so take a taxi or ride carefully.

Cafe on stilts in Lanta Old Town, Koh Lanta

Lanta Old Town, Koh Lanta: breakfast over the water

MorningHave breakfast in Lanta Old Town on the east coast. This former trading port has traditional wooden stilt houses, now cafés and seafood restaurants with sea views. Walk the jetty together for views of the nearby islands.

Mangrove boardwalk at Tung Yee Peng, Koh Lanta

Tung Yee Peng, Koh Lanta: a 20-minute mangrove boardwalk

Late morningWalk the wooden mangrove boardwalk at Tung Yee Peng. It takes about 20 minutes and costs ฿40, with colourful crabs along the way. If you have more time, rent a kayak for ฿300 a day and paddle through the mangroves.

AfternoonTransfer back to Krabi Airport for your flight home.

Low season alternative for Day 2

Lighthouse view at Mu Ko Lanta National Park

Mu Ko Lanta National Park: lighthouse views over two coves

If boat tours aren't running, spend Day 2 on land instead. Visit Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the southern tip. Entry is ฿200 per person, plus ฿20 for a scooter. Walk about 30 minutes up to the lighthouse for views over two coves.

Then relax at Bamboo Bay nearby, a wild beach where one writer counted fewer than 10 people. End the day at Kantiang Bay for sunset.

Tips for couples

  • Book adults-only hotels early for December to April, when they fill fast.
  • Mention your honeymoon or anniversary when booking. Many resorts add a special touch.
  • Hire a private longtail if you want an island trip without the crowds.
  • Halal food is easy to find on Koh Lanta, since most locals are Muslim.
  • Rent a scooter only if you're an experienced rider. Roads can be steep and potholed.
  • Carry cash for park fees, longtails and small restaurants.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking boat tours between May and October without checking they run.
  • Riding to Kantiang Bay at night on an unfamiliar scooter.
  • Staying in a family resort during school holidays when you want quiet.
  • Booking a late flight into Krabi without checking transfer times.
  • Forgetting that Twin Lotus is only adults-only from November to April.
