Where to Stay in Khao Sok: Floating Raft Houses vs Jungle Village

Floating raft houses and a jungle treehouse in Khao Sok

Raft house on the lake or bungalow in the jungle?

Khao Sok has two very different places to stay. One is a floating raft house on Cheow Lan Lake, surrounded by limestone cliffs. The other is a bungalow or treehouse in Khao Sok village, right next to the national park entrance.

They're about 60 to 65 km apart, roughly an hour's drive. Each suits a different kind of trip. This guide compares them on cost, comfort, food, activities and convenience. It then recommends the best plan for Malaysian travellers.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • Village hotel prices come from two sources. Passport & Stamps (updated September 2026) gives tier ranges. Travelfish gives undated walk-in prices. Other sources only give village prices in US dollars or euros, so I've left those out.
  • Raft house prices are mostly packages, not room rates. Budget packages like Smiley (฿2,500 for 2D1N) include boats, meals and activities. Trip Unpacked's upmarket ranges are "planning ranges," not fixed prices.
  • Raft house facilities vary a lot. Let's Venture Out says Smiley has private bathrooms. In Between Travels and Travelfish describe budget rafts with shared bathrooms. Check before booking.
  • I couldn't find any halal food in either area. MileHacker says halal food is rarely available in Khao Sok.
  • Distances differ slightly. Couples Travel Stories says the lake pier is about 65 km from the village. Cheow Lan Lake Travel says 60 to 65 km.

Smiley's 3D2N package costs ฿2,999 and Jungle Hostel's costs ฿3,499 per person, plus park fees.

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Bring halal snacks. Neither area has halal restaurants. Ask your raft house for seafood or vegetarian meals.
  • Bring cash for the lake. There are no ATMs on the water.
  • Pack a daypack for the raft night. Village hotels and tour offices store big bags.
  • Book raft houses early for December to April, the busiest season.
  • Choose an AC raft if you're visiting in the hot months of March and April.

  • Booking a budget raft and expecting Wi-Fi and private bathrooms.
  • Forgetting the lake and pier fees.
  • Carrying a big suitcase onto the longtail boat.
