Where to Stay in Koh Chang: White Sand Beach vs Kai Bae vs Lonely Beach

Koh Chang's west coast: White Sand Beach, Kai Bae and Lonely Beach

Koh Chang's west coast: three beaches, three very different stays

Koh Chang's three most popular bases are all on the west coast. White Sand Beach is in the north, Kai Bae is in the middle and Lonely Beach is further south. They're only 20 to 30 minutes apart by road, but each one feels very different.

White Sand Beach is the busiest and most convenient, with the best stretch of sand. Kai Bae is the all-round middle option, with great food. Lonely Beach is the budget and party hub. This guide compares all three side by side, with hotel prices in baht for each, so you can pick the right base.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • Hotel prices are typical high-season rates. They come from I Am Koh Chang's area guides and rise on holiday weekends. Check live prices before you book.
  • Sources disagree on Kai Bae's crowd. I Am Koh Chang calls Kai Bae the best all round family option on Koh Chang. Bobo and Chichi say it has a younger, quieter crowd with fewer families than White Sand. It suits both, depending on where you stay.
  • Lonely Beach's nightlife is quieter than it used to be. I Am Koh Chang says it has calmed down since its late-2010s peak. Bobo and Chichi's older visit mentions clubs playing music until 6am.
  • White Sand Beach is two different places. The north end has some of the island's best sand. I Am Koh Chang says the south end peters out into stones and bits of dead coral.
  • Halal food is limited in all three areas. White Sand Beach has the most Muslim-friendly options, such as Taste of India and Alaturka. None are certified halal.

White Sand Beach: best for convenience and the best sand

Powdery white sand at the north end of White Sand Beach

North White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

White Sand Beach (Hat Sai Khao) is Koh Chang's main tourist area, closest to the ferry. The Guide Koh Chang calls it by far the most developed and touristy beach. Everything is within walking distance: restaurants, bars, shops, 7-Elevens, a Makro, ATMs and a clinic. A nightly food market runs on the roadside.

The beach: I Am Koh Chang says the north end has powdery white sand. The stretch between KC Grande and White Sand Beach Resort is one of the island's best. The south end is stony, with little sand around the clifftop resorts. Home Is Where Your Bag Is says the water is shallow, so you'll wade out a few metres to swim.

Pros:

  • Closest to the ferry and the most convenient base
  • Best sand on the island at the north end
  • Widest choice of food, including Muslim-friendly Indian and Turkish restaurants

Cons:

  • The busiest and most crowded area
  • Roadside rooms can be noisy. Beachfront rooms are often close together.
  • The south end has a poor, stony beach

Kai Bae: best all-round base

Resort pool overlooking Kai Bae Bay

Resort pool overlooking Kai Bae, Koh Chang

Kai Bae sits between White Sand Beach and Lonely Beach. I Am Koh Chang calls it the best all-round family option on the island. It has a busy roadside strip of shops, bars and some of Koh Chang's best restaurants. These include Khao Kwan, El Barrio, Mordi e Fuggi and El Greco, which I Am Koh Chang says moved to Kai Bae in late 2025.

The beach: narrower than White Sand, with stones at low tide in places. The Guide Koh Chang says the best sand is at the north and south ends. The central beach can vanish at high tide. Make up for it with the pools: I Am Koh Chang highlights The Chill's long pool and Mam Kai Bae's rooftop pool. You can also kayak to Koh Man Nai island in about 20 minutes.

Pros:

  • Excellent restaurants within walking distance
  • Wide range of hotels at every price
  • Less crowded than White Sand, with more services than quieter areas
  • Speedboats to Koh Wai, Koh Mak and Koh Kood

Cons:

  • Average, narrow beach in the middle section
  • Prices are rising. Many places cost more than Lonely Beach.
  • Some older resorts look tired

Lonely Beach: best for budget and nightlife

Lonely Beach with palm trees

Lonely Beach, Koh Chang

Lonely Beach is Koh Chang's backpacker and party hub. I Am Koh Chang calls it Koh Chang's party place, but says it's moving upmarket and now attracts families and older visitors too. The village has a Khao San Road feel, with tattoo shops, bars and cheap food.

The beach: The Guide Koh Chang describes it as small but excellent. South of the sand, the shore becomes rocky. Home Is Where Your Bag Is says the water gets deep quickly and there's little shade.

Nightlife: Ting Tong Bar and Himmel are the main party spots, with loud music and fire shows. Nhings has live blues. Mimo and Life's a Beach are more relaxed beach bars.

Pros:

  • Cheapest rooms on the island
  • Liveliest nightlife and a social atmosphere
  • Treetop Adventure Park nearby

Cons:

  • Noisy, especially in roadside rooms
  • Crowded main beach
  • Less authentic Thai food
  • Very limited halal options

Which area should you choose?

  • First visit to Koh Chang: White Sand Beach
  • Families with kids: Kai Bae (KB Resort or Kai Bae Beach Resort) or north White Sand Beach (Kacha Resort)
  • Couples: Kai Bae (GajaPuri or The Chill)
  • Food lovers: Kai Bae
  • Backpackers and nightlife: Lonely Beach
  • Muslim travellers: White Sand Beach, for the most Muslim-friendly food choices
  • Best beach: north White Sand Beach
  • Quiet nights: north White Sand Beach, or look at Klong Prao instead

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Stay near the north end of White Sand Beach for the best sand and easy access to food.
  • Book early for December to February, when prices peak.
  • Ask for a room away from the road in Lonely Beach and south White Sand Beach to avoid noise.
  • Use songthaews between areas. All three are on the same west coast road.
  • Check the halal options in our White Sand Beach halal food guide.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Booking south White Sand Beach expecting a sandy beach.
  • Staying on Lonely Beach's main road if you're a light sleeper.
  • Expecting a wide beach in central Kai Bae.
  • Assuming Kai Bae is cheaper than Lonely Beach.
