Klong Plu Waterfall Koh Chang: Ticket Price, Opening Hours & Swimming

Klong Plu Waterfall and plunge pool, Koh Chang

Klong Plu Waterfall: Koh Chang's most famous swimming spot

Klong Plu (also spelled Khlong Phlu) is Koh Chang's most famous waterfall. It sits inside Mu Ko Chang National Park, just inland from Klong Prao Beach on the west coast. A short jungle trail leads to a ravine with cliffs on three sides. The falls drop into a large plunge pool where you can swim. Small fish nibble at your feet.

This guide covers the ticket price, opening hours, the walk and swimming. It also covers the best time to visit and how to combine Klong Plu with other sights.

⚠️ Honest note:
  • Opening times differ slightly. Bucketlistly lists 8am to 4:30pm. I Am Koh Chang advises arriving when it opens at 08:30. I couldn't find an official national park timetable, so aim for 8:30am.
  • Distance from the beach differs. I Am Koh Chang says the entrance is about 1 km inland from Klong Prao Beach. Byklo and Thai Holiday Guide say about 3.3 km inland. Either way, it's a short ride by scooter or songthaew.
  • The best season depends on the source. Travelfish says July to October. I Am Koh Chang says October to late December, when all the falls have water. Bucketlistly says September has the most water. All agree the pool gets shallower in the late dry season.
  • Travelfish's review dates from 2018. I've used it for general details, not prices.
  • There's no halal food at the waterfall. The shops at the entrance sell Thai snacks and meals, but none are listed as halal. Bring your own snacks.

How to get there

Klong Plu is on the west coast, behind Klong Prao Beach.

  • By scooter: follow the signs inland from the main road at Klong Prao. Bucketlistly advises parking at the free spot in front of the ranger office, not before the park entrance.
  • By songthaew: a shared songthaew from Ao Sapparot pier to Klong Prao costs about ฿70 (Visit Thailand Today). Ask the driver to drop you at the waterfall road.
  • On foot: if you're staying at Klong Prao, I Am Koh Chang says you can walk to the entrance.

The walk to the falls

Jungle trail with steps along the stream to Klong Plu

Jungle trail to Klong Plu Waterfall, Koh Chang

The trail is about 600 m long and follows a stream into a ravine. I Am Koh Chang says it takes 15 to 20 minutes, with concrete steps and guide ropes in places. Byklo describes it as a flat 10-minute walk. Bucketlistly calls the path rocky.

Wear proper shoes, not flip-flops. Travelfish also warns visitors not to step on the light-blue plastic water pipes along the trail. Damaging one can cut water to part of the island.

The old hillside nature trail is now roped off, according to I Am Koh Chang.

Swimming at Klong Plu

Swimmers in the Klong Plu plunge pool

Swimming at Klong Plu Waterfall, Koh Chang

The falls drop into a large plunge pool. There are smaller pools further downstream. Travelfish says most visitors swim in the deeper lower pool. The narrow upper pool is only safe when the current is weak.

Small fish nibble dead skin in the pool. I Am Koh Chang says you may spot a turtle in the smaller pools. Some visitors climb the rocks and jump in. Park rangers act as lifeguards, but always check the depth first.

Swimming tips:

  • Go early, before tour groups arrive.
  • Bring a towel and a change of clothes. No changing rooms are listed.
  • Wear water shoes. The rocks are slippery.
  • Don't jump if you're unsure of the depth, especially in the dry season.

Klong Prao Beach, near Klong Plu Waterfall

  • Klong Prao Beach: spend the afternoon on Koh Chang's longest beach and watch the sunset.
  • Than Mayom Waterfall: use the same ticket on the same day. It's on the east coast, so you'll need your own transport. I Am Koh Chang says it's only worth it if you're interested in the royal history.
  • Kai Bae Viewpoint: a short ride south for views over the islands.

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Bring snacks. Food at the entrance isn't halal.
  • Modest swimwear is fine. No dress rule is listed for the pool.
  • Carry cash for the entry fee.
  • Use insect repellent. Bucketlistly recommends it for the jungle trail.
  • Visit with kids. I Am Koh Chang describes the trail as suitable for almost anyone.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Arriving at midday with the tour groups.

  • Throwing away your ticket before visiting Than Mayom on the same day.
  • Jumping from the rocks without checking the depth.
  • Stepping on the blue water pipes along the trail.
