How to Take the Train from KL to Hat Yai

Kuala Lumpur to Hat Yai by rail comes down to two real options: a seasonal direct train, or a two-train combo that runs year-round.

Option 1: MySawasdee, the direct charter train

KTMB runs a direct overnight service, Train 1004, straight from KL Sentral to Hat Yai with no transfers. It only operates on selected long weekend and holiday dates, so it won't be available whenever you want to travel.

• Departs KL Sentral 10:30pm, arrives Hat Yai 8:50am (Thailand time), about 11 hours
• Stops at Sungai Buloh, Ipoh, Taiping, and Padang Besar
• Return service (Train 1005) departs Hat Yai 10:20am, arrives KL Sentral 11:15pm

Option 2: ETS plus connecting train, runs every day

The flexible route: take the regular ETS (Electric Train Service) from KL Sentral to Padang Besar, the border station, clear immigration on foot, then board a short connecting train into Hat Yai.

• Book the KL to Padang Besar leg online through KTMB's website or the KITS app. The Padang Besar to Hat Yai leg works differently: those tickets are only sold in person at the counter after you clear immigration, so build that queue into your timing rather than assuming you can pre-book the whole journey.
• Don't cut the Padang Besar connection too close. If your ETS arrives late or the immigration queue is long, you can miss the connecting train and be stuck waiting for the next one.
• Keep in mind Thailand is an hour ahead of Malaysia. Arrival times quoted in Thailand time can make a journey look shorter or longer than it actually feels if you don't adjust for the difference.
• Carry a physical passport, not a digital copy. Immigration counters at Padang Besar don't accept digital copies on either the Malaysian or Thai side.
• If you're set on MySawasdee, book as soon as travel dates are announced. Seats on the direct charter train sell out quickly, often within days.
• If you land in Padang Besar with a long gap before the next connecting train, a minivan (about 50 THB, roughly 50 minutes) to Hat Yai bus station is a faster backup than waiting.
