How to Bring a Malaysian Car Into Thailand at Bukit Kayu Hitam: Document Checklist

Driving your own car into Thailand isn't complicated, but it does require documents from both sides of the border, prepared in the right order. Get this wrong and you're either turned back at Bukit Kayu Hitam or, worse, uninsured if something goes wrong once you're there. Here's the complete checklist.

Why this matters more than people think

Recent floods in Hat Yai left over 500 Malaysian-owned vehicles stranded, and many owners discovered too late that their Malaysian car insurance never actually covered them once they crossed into Thailand. Standard Malaysian comprehensive policies stop at the Malaysian border by default. Everything below exists to close that gap, not just to satisfy a checklist.

Malaysia-side documents (sort these before you leave home)

Valid passport, at least 6 months validity remaining, for every person in the car.

Malaysian driving license, plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). Malaysia and Thailand both recognise each other's licenses under the 1985 ASEAN agreement, technically making an IDP optional, but checkpoints don't always apply that distinction cleanly, and getting an IDP through JPJ or AAM beforehand removes any ambiguity.

Bring the original vehicle registration card, never a photocopy

Original vehicle registration card (geran kereta), not a photocopy. This is non-negotiable at the border, and it's required whether you're driving your own car or someone else's.

Valid road tax. An expired road tax will cause problems before you even reach Thai customs.

Authorisation letter, if you're driving a car that isn't registered in your name. This needs to be stamped by a Commissioner of Oaths (Pesuruhjaya Sumpah), roughly RM10 per stamp. Some borders check this more strictly than others, Rantau Panjang is known for enforcing it consistently, but it's worth having regardless of which crossing you use.

Endorsement 101 and 57 are added to your existing policy, not a separate purchase

Endorsement 101, the extension that pushes your Malaysian comprehensive insurance coverage across the border into Thailand. Without it, your Malaysian policy simply stops working the moment you cross, covering neither your own vehicle damage nor third-party claims. Endorsement 101 extends this coverage for trips up to 30 days, covering own damage and up to RM100,000 in third-party property loss. It costs roughly 0.2% of your vehicle's insured value, arranged through your existing insurance agent or provider before you travel.

Endorsement 57, an additional flood and natural disaster extension. This is the one the Hat Yai floods made painfully relevant, without it, flood damage isn't covered even with Endorsement 101 active. Also low-cost, and worth adding at the same time as Endorsement 101 rather than as an afterthought.

Thailand-side documents (sorted at or before the border)

The vehicle and passenger checkpoint at Bukit Kayu Hitam

Thai Compulsory Motor Insurance (CMI), also called Por Ror Bor. This is separate from Endorsement 101 and mandatory regardless of what Malaysian coverage you're carrying. It covers third-party injury only, not your own vehicle, and costs around RM25. Buy it at agent counters near Bukit Kayu Hitam, or online in advance through a registered provider.

TM2 form, the vehicle information declaration required at land borders. Insurance agents at the border typically help complete this alongside your CMI purchase.

TM3 form, the passenger list, listing everyone travelling in the vehicle. Also usually handled together with TM2 and your insurance purchase.

A submitted TDAC, needed for every passenger, not just the driver

TDAC (Thailand Digital Arrival Card), submitted online at tdac.immigration.go.th within 72 hours before arrival, for every passenger, not just the driver. This replaced the old paper TM6 arrival card and applies to land crossings the same as airports.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Assuming Endorsement 101 replaces Thai Compulsory Motor Insurance. It doesn't, they're separate, and you need both, not one or the other
• Skipping Endorsement 57 because Endorsement 101 feels like enough. The Hat Yai floods specifically showed this gap, own damage cover and flood cover are not the same thing
• Bringing a photocopy of your vehicle registration instead of the original. Border officials expect the original document, not a copy
• Driving someone else's car without a properly stamped authorisation letter. An unstamped letter, or none at all, can hold you up significantly at borders that check for it
• Submitting the TDAC too early or too late. It only accepts submissions within 72 hours of arrival, and every passenger needs their own, not just the driver
• Leaving insurance arrangements to the last minute. Endorsement 101 and 57 need to be arranged through your agent before you leave, not something you can sort out at the border itself
