Koh Phi Phi vs Railay Beach: Which Is Better?

Longtail boats below the cliffs of Railay West, Krabi

Railay West, Krabi: cliffs and calm water a short boat ride from Ao Nang

Koh Phi Phi and Railay Beach are two of the most famous spots on Thailand's Andaman coast. Both have no cars, towering limestone cliffs and turquoise water.

Railay isn't actually an island. It's a peninsula on the Krabi mainland, cut off by cliffs, so you can only reach it by boat. This 15-point comparison helps you pick the right one, or plan to see both.

Worth being upfront about three things: first, many forum opinions comparing the two are old, some from 2003. I use them only for general feel, not prices. Second, halal food on Railay is limited. Zabihah lists the restaurant at Railay Village Resort as certified halal, but it also notes an active issue report under review. Confirm with the hotel. Most halal food is in nearby Ao Nang. Third, the direct boat between Railay and Phi Phi is based on one booking site's listing for October 2026. Times and prices may change by season.

The quick answer

Choose Koh Phi Phi for snorkelling, island tours and nightlife, all within walking distance. Choose Railay Beach for rock climbing, quieter evenings and easy access from Krabi airport. Ao Nang's halal food is also just 10 to 15 minutes away by longtail.

Speedboat leaving Railay for Koh Phi Phi

Railay to Koh Phi Phi: direct boats in about 40 minutes by speedboat

You can. A direct boat runs from Railay to Phi Phi. One October 2026 listing shows a 9:45am boat at ฿650 (1 hour 45 minutes). It also shows speedboats at 10:30am and 3:00pm for ฿1,000 (about 40 minutes). Stay 2 nights on Railay, then 2 nights on Phi Phi.

Practical tips

  • Pack light for Railay. At high tide you may wade through knee-deep water to get on and off the longtail.
  • Book Railay hotels early in high season, as there are few of them.
  • Stay on Railay West for the best swimming beach.
  • Muslim travellers can stay in Ao Nang and visit Railay on a day trip.
  • Visit from November to April. March and April give the best mix of dry weather and lighter crowds.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Thinking Railay is an island you can reach by road.
  • Swimming at Railay East, which is mainly a boat wharf.
  • Attempting the Railay Viewpoint hike in flip-flops.
  • Arriving late in the day without checking boat times.
  • Expecting Phi Phi-style parties on Railay.
