How to Get Around Kuala Lumpur by LRT, Monorail & MRT: Map, Routes & Travel Guide

LRT train on an elevated track in Kuala Lumpur

Getting around KL by train

Kuala Lumpur's trains are the easiest way to skip the traffic. Six Rapid KL lines connect the city centre with KL Sentral, KLCC, Bukit Bintang and Chinatown.

Fares start from a few ringgit. Malaysians can ride unlimited for a month with the RM50 My50 pass. Here's how the network works, which station to use for each attraction and how to pay.

Fares and how to pay

Fares are distance-based. Mapa Metro puts single-ride tokens at about RM1.30 to RM6.00. Short trips in the city centre usually cost RM1.30 to RM3.50.

Ways to pay (Soya Cincau, May 2026):

  • Touch 'n Go card. Tap in and out on all Rapid KL trains and buses.
  • Single-journey tokens. Buy them at ticket machines or station counters.
  • QR payment works at station counters for buying tokens or topping up a Touch 'n Go card.
  • Credit and debit cards can buy tokens or top up at machines, but you can't tap them at the gates yet. Soya Cincau reports that Prasarana is rolling out open payment. It expects 30% of rail gates to support card tapping within 12 months of the contract award.

Tips for Malaysian travellers

  • Get My50 if you're in KL for more than a week. It pays for itself quickly.
  • Use Rapid Keluarga for family weekends. RM30 covers up to four people for the day.
  • Plan with Google Maps. KL City Guide recommends it for routes and interchanges. Mapa Metro suggests the Rapid KL PULSE app.
  • Check the destination before boarding on the Ampang and Sri Petaling lines.
  • No eating or drinking on platforms or trains (Traveloka). Get off at Kampung Baru for halal Malay food.
